About

Rarebeasts is the work of Brian McNamara — an experimental sound sculptor and installation artist based in Bungendore, NSW, Australia.

For over a decade, Rarebeasts has built kinetic sound sculptures, hand-cranked sequencers, drone machines, and circuit-bent instruments — devices with a tactile, slightly absurd, "alive-feeling" character, often housed in organic or found-object enclosures. The work explores the space between technology, environment, and human-machine boundaries: instruments that feel less like tools and more like creatures.

This site is where the building happens in the open. Alongside the finished pieces, you'll find full write-ups on how they're made — schematics, code, and the mistakes along the way — plus a growing set of electronics tutorials (signal generators, spectrum analysers, oscilloscopes) built around the CYD board, for anyone who wants to get hands-on with the same tools.
